The residence at 3 Dows Lane is part of the farm at Philipsburg Manor which was built in 1708 and first occupied by Capt. Johannes Buckhout. The farm was bordered by the Hudson River, Highland Turnpike Road (now Route 9), and property to the west of the Croton Aqueduct, which later became part of what is now Dows Lane. In 1760, the property was purchased and occupied by several generations of the Jewell family and subsequently purchased and occupied by several generations of the Mairs family in 1868. The current occupants, a landscape contractor and elementary school teacher, purchased the carriage house and stables in 2000. The grounds have been lovingly designed and maintained and include statuary from the couple’s trips around the world.
